The Ballad of Cinderella Jones by Victoria Hanan Iglesias

The novel instantly created a scene in which I could get a real sense for the character, and what life throws at her. It moves at quite a good pace. Sometimes it can feel as it’s moving slow, but then again I don’t think the novel is designed as a fast dance, but a slow waltz, moving to a sensual rumba. The gradual increase of knowledge the reader gets of the character is produced by those past experiences of her life. She may appear fickle at times, but the author has a unique way of making the character feel real, without forcing anything. She is what she is.

One of the main starting principles here, if someone is too good to be true… they probably are.  The author does create a sense of suspense by going from the past to the present. Giving small clues to how the main character got there. This did cause me to want to keep reading to find out what happens.

Along her journey of discovery, she meets interesting people that remind her of her past. I wasn’t sure if I would like this, as I prefer thrillers or mysteries etc. But something about the raw vulnerability of Talia (the main character) struck a chord. Each chapter giving more insight, and enabling the reader to connect and emphasis with her.

Sometimes it can randomly shoot back to the past without warning, which at times can be distracting, so the reader as to quickly remind themselves of where the story is heading. But even so, you can quickly get a sense of what is happening, and when it does go to the past.

What is quite appealing is “I know what she means”, what happened to her in a relationship can probably be felt by most women.

I think the author has done a good job of displaying the character’s emotions of desperation.  The way the story is narrated, taking a Camino or a trek across Spain, meeting different people along the way that influenced her. Locations of Spain, you can see how Talia is growing as the story progresses.

The terrible abuse the main character experiences increases her vulnerability and strength. That despite the odds, she can fight against what has happened, and use it to strengthen her resolve. Of course at times, she also believes she is not worth it.

The ending was quite touching. Her adventure lead her to meet motivating people, travel to fascinating places, learn more about herself, and discover she can do things she never thought possible.

An inspiring read for women that feel that life has dealt them a losing hand. Inspires people to realize their full potential, and discover things about themselves in places they never thought of looking.

3 ½ out of 5 stars.
